About this calculator

Activation rate is the share of new signups who reach the “aha moment” — the point in a product where a user experiences its core value for the first time, like sending a first message, creating a first project, or completing onboarding — divided by total signups.

This metric sits at the heart of product-led growth (PLG): a low activation rate means people are signing up but never actually experiencing what makes the product valuable, which is usually a much bigger leak than acquisition or even retention. Product managers and growth teams define their own activation event based on user behavior data correlated with long-term retention, then track this rate to prioritize onboarding fixes. This calculator takes your activated users and total signups to compute the activation rate and the number who didn’t activate.
