About this calculator

Actual Cash Value (ACV) is what an item is worth today, not what it cost when new — it's the replacement cost of the item minus depreciation for age, wear, and use. Insurance policies that pay out on an ACV basis (as opposed to "replacement cost" coverage) reimburse a claimant for this depreciated value, which is why a five-year-old car, roof, or laptop often gets a claim payout far below what a brand-new equivalent would cost.

Insurers, adjusters, and policyholders use ACV to settle claims after theft, accidents, or damage, and it's also used more broadly to price used goods and estimate the fair value of aging assets. This calculator takes an item's replacement cost, its age, and a depreciation rate and returns its actual cash value today.
