About this calculator

This calculator quantifies the anchoring effect in pricing psychology: the perceived discount a shopper feels when a current price is shown next to a higher "anchor" (original or reference) price, even if that anchor was never really the prevailing market price. It reports both the raw saving amount and the percentage off the anchor.

Anchoring is one of the most studied biases in behavioural economics, and retailers, e-commerce platforms and negotiators use reference prices deliberately — showing a struck-through "was" price — because the size of the anchor shapes how good a deal feels, independent of the actual price paid.
