About this calculator
A star's apparent magnitude (m) measures how bright it looks from Earth, while absolute magnitude (M) is the apparent magnitude it would have at a standard distance of 10 parsecs — a way of comparing stars' true luminosities independent of how far away they happen to be. The two are related by the distance modulus formula: m − M = 5·log₁₀(d) − 5, where d is the distance in parsecs; this calculator solves that equation for M given the apparent magnitude and distance.
Astronomy students and amateur astronomers use this conversion to compare a star's actual luminosity to the Sun's (absolute magnitude +4.83) regardless of distance — a star can look faint simply because it's far away, or bright simply because it's close, and only absolute magnitude strips that distance effect out. It's a standard step in building and reading Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, and the same distance-modulus relationship (rearranged) is how astronomers estimate distances to standard candles like Cepheid variables and Type Ia supernovae.
