How do I convert area units?
Result
How it is calculated
The value is first converted to square metres using the exact factor of the chosen unit, then divided by each target factor to list every unit at once: result = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(target). Factors (m²): km² = 1,000,000; ha = 10,000; acre = 4,046.8564224; ft² = 0.09290304; yd² = 0.83612736. Results have two decimals, so very small values in large units, such as km², may show as 0.01 or 0.00. The tool uses the international acre and the international foot. Other local land units, like the dönüm, are not included. An unknown unit falls back to m².
Worked example
Convert 2.5 acres. In square metres: 2.5 × 4,046.8564224 = 10,117.14 m². In hectares: 10,117.14 / 10,000 = 1.01 ha. In square feet: 10,117.14 / 0.09290304 = 108,900.00 ft² (an acre is 43,560 ft²). In square yards: 12,100.00 yd². In km² the value is only 0.01 km².
Common mistakes
- Choosing hectares when the plot is in acres; one hectare is about 2.47 acres.
- Mixing linear and square conversion: 1 yard is 3 feet but 1 yd² is 9 ft², not 3.
- Expecting the dönüm or other local units to be in the list; they are not.
- Reading 0.00 km² for a small plot and thinking the area is zero; use m² or ha for small areas.
About this calculator
This tool converts a measurement of area between metric units (square meters, square kilometers, hectares) and imperial/US units (acres, square feet, square yards), applying the fixed conversion factors between each unit pair — for example, one hectare equals exactly 10,000 square meters and about 2.47 acres.
Real estate listings, land surveys, farming and construction plans routinely mix these unit systems depending on the country: hectares are common in land and farmland listings, acres dominate in the US and UK property market, and square meters or square feet are used for building floor plans. Buyers comparing a plot of land listed in acres against a domestic listing in square meters, or farmers converting hectares to acres, use this calculator to put both figures on the same footing.
