About this calculator

The “rule of thumb minus age” guideline is a rough shortcut for setting a portfolio’s stock-to-bond split: subtract your age from a fixed number (traditionally 100, though many modern advisors use 110 or 120 to reflect longer life expectancy) to get the percentage that should be in stocks, with the rest in bonds.

The logic is that younger investors have more time to recover from stock market volatility and so can afford more equity exposure, while older investors nearing or in retirement shift toward the relative stability of bonds. This calculator applies that formula to your age to give a quick starting-point allocation — it is a simplified heuristic, not a substitute for advice tailored to individual risk tolerance and goals.
