About this calculator
Bleach dilution is a dimensional-analysis problem built on the dilution relationship C1V1 = C2V2: the target chlorine concentration in parts per million, multiplied by the total solution volume, tells you how much active chlorine mass is needed, and dividing that by the bleach product’s percent available chlorine (adjusted for the density of the solution) gives the volume of bleach to add. Household bleach is typically sold around 6–8.25% sodium hypochlorite, so the same target ppm requires very different volumes depending on which strength you use.
Restaurants and food-service operations follow published sanitizing ranges (commonly around 50–200 ppm for food-contact surfaces per health-department and CDC guidance), water treatment operators dose to disinfection targets, and households use it for diluted cleaning or disinfecting solutions. Enter your target ppm, the volume of solution you’re making, and your bleach’s strength to get the amount of bleach to add.
