About this calculator

The blue wavelengths emitted by phone, tablet, and computer screens are especially effective at suppressing the body's production of melatonin, the hormone that signals it's time to sleep, which is why late-night screen use is consistently linked to trouble falling asleep and lower sleep quality.

Sleep hygiene guidelines commonly recommend stopping screen use somewhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours before bed to let melatonin levels rise naturally. This calculator simply subtracts your chosen lead time from your bedtime to give you a concrete screens-off time to build into your nightly routine.
