About this calculator

The Katch-McArdle formula estimates basal metabolic rate as BMR = 370 + 21.6 × lean body mass (kg), where lean body mass is your total weight minus fat mass — calculated from your body weight and body fat percentage. Unlike formulas that use total weight directly (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-St Jeor), this one is built specifically around fat-free mass, since muscle tissue is what actually drives most of your resting energy burn.

That makes it noticeably more accurate for lean, muscular, or athletic individuals whose body composition differs a lot from population averages — which is why it's the formula of choice for bodybuilders, athletes, and personal trainers who already know (or can estimate) their body fat percentage and want a BMR figure that reflects their actual muscle mass rather than just their scale weight.
