About this calculator

Body cell mass (BCM) is the metabolically active portion of your fat-free mass — the actual living, working cells in your muscles, organs, and blood — as distinct from the extracellular fluid, connective tissue, and bone that make up the rest of your lean mass but don't burn much energy or drive metabolism. It is a more precise nutritional marker than total lean body mass because two people with identical fat-free mass can have very different amounts of truly active tissue.

BCM is typically estimated from formulas relating it to body potassium content (since potassium is concentrated almost entirely inside living cells) or, more practically, from weight, body fat percentage, and sex using regression equations derived from studies like Moore's classic body composition work, which established reference values for BCM by age and sex.

Clinicians and dietitians track body cell mass in conditions where distinguishing true tissue loss from fluid shifts matters — cancer cachexia, sarcopenia in aging, dialysis and ICU nutrition assessment — because a patient can lose significant BCM (real muscle wasting) while total body weight or even fat-free mass stays deceptively stable due to fluid retention.
