Brick Calculator

Find how many bricks a wall needs.

1,200
1,320

How it is calculated

The number of bricks is the wall area multiplied by the bricks needed per square metre: bricks = area × bricks per m², rounded up to a whole brick. A second figure adds a 10% allowance for breakage and cutting: with waste = bricks × 1.1, again rounded up. The area is in square metres and is the wall length times its height, and you should subtract doors and windows yourself. If the bricks-per-m² field is empty or not positive, 60 is used. The right figure depends on the brick size, the mortar joint and whether the wall is one brick or a half brick thick, so check your product's data.

Worked example

A wall of 20 m² built with a brick that needs 60 per m². Bricks = 20 × 60 = 1,200. With a 10% allowance, 1,200 × 1.1 = 1,320. So buy about 1,320 bricks, rather than the bare 1,200.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the length of the wall instead of its area; multiply length by height first.
  • Forgetting to subtract door and window openings, which makes the count too high.
  • Using the default 60 per m² for a brick of a different size or a thicker wall.
  • Ignoring the waste allowance and running out on site.
  • Mixing up the wall area with the floor area of the room.

About this calculator

This calculator estimates how many bricks are needed to build a wall by dividing the wall's area (length × height) by the number of bricks required to cover one square metre — a figure that depends on the brick size and the mortar joint thickness used, since standard bricks laid with typical 10mm mortar joints usually work out to around 50–60 bricks per square metre for a single-thickness wall.

Builders, contractors, and DIY homeowners use this kind of estimate to order the right quantity of materials before starting a project, avoiding both costly mid-job reorders and excess waste — most professionals also add a 5–10% buffer on top of the raw calculation to account for cuts, breakages, and pattern-related waste. Enter the wall's dimensions and the bricks-per-square-metre figure to find the total bricks needed.
