About this calculator

Capacity utilization measures how much of a facility's maximum possible output is actually being produced, calculated as actual output divided by potential output at full capacity, expressed as a percentage. A factory running at 60% utilization has significant room to grow output without new capital investment, while one running near 100% is approaching the point where it needs to expand, add shifts, or invest in new equipment to grow further.

Manufacturers use this metric to plan production schedules and capital spending, economists watch aggregate capacity utilization (like the rate published for the manufacturing sector) as a leading indicator of inflationary pressure — tight capacity tends to push costs and prices up — and operations managers use plant-level utilization to spot underused equipment or bottleneck lines. This calculator takes your actual and potential output figures and returns the utilization percentage.
