About this calculator

A car insurance premium starts from a base rate set by the insurer for a standard policy, and then gets adjusted up or down by a risk multiplier that reflects factors like the driver's age, driving history, location, vehicle type, and claims record — a higher-risk profile pushes the multiplier above 1, a lower-risk one pushes it below. Discounts (safe-driver, multi-policy, good-student, and similar programs) are then subtracted from that adjusted figure to arrive at the final premium.

This layered structure — base rate, risk adjustment, discount — is how most insurers build a quote, even though the exact factors and weightings are proprietary and vary by company. This calculator takes a base rate, a risk multiplier, and a discount percentage and returns a quick estimate of what the premium would be.
