About this calculator

The metric carat used for gemstones and diamonds has been standardized worldwide since 1907 as exactly 0.2 grams (200 milligrams), replacing a patchwork of local carat weights that varied slightly by country. It's unrelated to gold “karat” purity, which is a completely different measure despite the similar name.

Jewelers, gemologists, and diamond graders convert carats to grams and milligrams when working with lab equipment or certificates that report weight in metric units, or when comparing a stone's mass against grading-lab reference tables.
