About this calculator

This calculator scales the standard rule of thumb that an adult laying hen eats roughly 120 g (about a quarter pound) of layer feed per day up to daily, weekly and monthly totals for a whole flock, adjusting for flock size and breed-driven appetite differences, since larger dual-purpose breeds typically eat more than smaller layer breeds.

Backyard chicken keepers use it to budget feed purchases and avoid running out mid-week, while small-scale poultry farmers use the same per-bird ratio to plan bulk feed orders and estimate the feed cost per dozen eggs produced, a key number for pricing eggs or evaluating flock profitability.
