A circle's circumference is the distance around its edge, given by C = 2πr (equivalently πd, since diameter d = 2r), where π ≈ 3.14159 is the fixed ratio between any circle's circumference and its diameter — a constant discovered independently across ancient Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Chinese mathematics because it governs every circle regardless of size. The same radius also determines the circle's area, A = πr², a distinct formula that scales with the square of the radius rather than linearly.

These two formulas are used constantly outside the classroom: engineers use circumference to size belts, chains, pipes and wheels (a wheel's circumference tells you exactly how far it travels per rotation, which is the basis of odometers and speedometers); manufacturers use it to calculate material needed for circular gaskets, rings and tubing; and landscapers or construction crews use circle area and circumference together to estimate fencing length versus ground coverage for round features like pools, gardens or roundabouts.
