About this calculator

This calculator computes VAM (velocità ascensionale media), Italian for "average ascent speed" — the number of vertical metres climbed per hour, found by dividing elevation gain by climb time (in hours). A cyclist who climbs 1,000 m in 45 minutes, for instance, posts a VAM of 1,333 m/h.

Cyclists and coaches use VAM to compare climbing performance independent of gradient or road surface, since it isolates pure vertical speed rather than horizontal pace. Elite professional climbers on sustained mountain stages typically hold VAM figures around 1,700–1,850 m/h, and the metric is widely used alongside power-to-weight ratio to gauge and flag suspicious climbing performances.
