About this calculator

Comparing two fractions like 3/4 and 5/7 without a calculator usually relies on cross multiplication: multiply the numerator of each fraction by the denominator of the other, 3 × 7 versus 5 × 4, and compare the resulting products — whichever cross product is larger tells you which original fraction is larger, without needing to find a common denominator first. The two fractions are equal only when both cross products match exactly.

Students use this method as a faster alternative to converting fractions to decimals or finding a least common denominator when comparing fraction sizes on homework and tests, and the same logic comes up in everyday situations — comparing ingredient ratios in two recipes, comparing unit prices expressed as fractions, or checking which of two measurements represents a larger proportion of a whole.

This calculator takes two fractions and tells you which one is greater, smaller, or whether they’re equal.
