About this calculator

This calculator applies the Katz correction formula — corrected sodium = measured sodium + 1.6 × ((glucose − 100) / 100) — to adjust a serum sodium reading for high blood glucose, since hyperglycemia pulls water out of cells and artificially dilutes the measured sodium.

Clinicians and nurses use it when evaluating patients with diabetic ketoacidosis or severe hyperglycemia, where the raw lab sodium number can look falsely low and mask a true sodium disorder. It's a standard calculation covered in internal medicine and critical care training.
