About this calculator

APY (Annual Percentage Yield) and APR (Annual Percentage Rate) both describe an annual return, but APR is the simple, non-compounded rate while APY accounts for compounding — reinvesting earned interest or rewards so future periods earn returns on top of previously earned returns. The conversion formula is APY = (1 + APR/n)^n − 1, where n is the number of compounding periods per year (daily, weekly, or continuously, depending on the protocol).

This distinction matters a lot in crypto staking and DeFi yield farming, where protocols advertise either APR or APY and the more frequently rewards compound, the bigger the gap between the two figures becomes — a platform auto-compounding rewards daily will produce a noticeably higher APY than its stated APR would suggest. Comparing two opportunities fairly requires converting both to the same basis, since an APR from one protocol isn't directly comparable to an APY from another.

This calculator takes your APR and compounding frequency and returns the equivalent compounded APY.
