About this calculator

Takt time — from the German Taktzeit, meaning “pulse” or “beat” — is the maximum time allowed per unit to keep up with customer demand: available production time divided by demand over that period. Cycle time is the actual time your process takes to complete one unit, measured on the shop floor.

Comparing the two tells you whether a process is keeping pace: if cycle time is longer than takt time, that step is a bottleneck holding back the whole line; if it’s shorter, that station has spare capacity. Lean manufacturing practitioners, industrial engineers, and Six Sigma teams use this comparison — a core concept from the Toyota Production System — to balance production lines and spot where to focus improvement efforts. This calculator computes takt time from your available time and demand, then flags whether your actual cycle time keeps pace.
