About this calculator
Choosing an insurance plan almost always means trading off premium (what you pay regardless of whether you file a claim) against deductible (what you pay out of pocket before coverage kicks in on a claim). A lower-premium, higher-deductible plan is cheaper if you rarely claim, but can cost more overall in a bad year; a higher-premium, lower-deductible plan smooths out that risk at a steady cost.
This calculator estimates the total annual cost of a plan by adding the premium you'll pay no matter what to the deductible (or portion of it) you'd actually pay based on expected claims. Comparing that combined figure across two or more plan options — rather than premium or deductible alone — is how insurance shoppers, HR benefits teams, and small-business owners actually judge which plan is cheaper for their real, expected usage.
