About this calculator
Grapes and raisins are known to cause acute kidney injury in some dogs, though the exact toxic compound is still debated (tartaric acid is the leading suspect). Veterinary toxicology guidelines, most notably from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, put the level of concern at roughly 0.7 grams of grapes per kilogram of body weight, and a much lower threshold — around 0.1 g/kg — for the more concentrated raisins, since susceptibility varies unpredictably between individual dogs and even a small amount has triggered severe reactions in some cases.
This calculator compares the grams your dog ingested, scaled by its body weight, against these guideline thresholds to show whether the ingestion falls into a range of concern. Dog owners who've just discovered their pet ate grapes or raisins, and veterinary clinic staff doing a quick triage assessment over the phone use it as a first screening step — it is not a substitute for contacting a veterinarian or animal poison control, since any grape or raisin ingestion is generally treated as a reason to seek veterinary guidance.
