How it is calculated
The down payment is the share of the purchase price you pay up front, and the remainder is what you need to borrow: down = price × percent ÷ 100 and loan = price − down. Price is a plain amount of money and percent is the down-payment rate between 0 and 100. A negative price, or a percentage below 0 or above 100, returns no result. The tool only splits the price; it does not add fees, taxes, insurance or interest, and the minimum down payment a lender requires depends on the country, the lender and the type of asset.
Worked example
Price 3,000,000 and a 20% down payment. Down payment: 3,000,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = $600,000.00. Remaining loan: 3,000,000 − 600,000 = $2,400,000.00. If the same price were bought with 30% down, the down payment would rise to 900,000 and the loan would fall to 2,100,000, so each extra 10 points moves 300,000 from the loan to your own cash.
Common mistakes
- Typing the rate as a fraction (0.2) instead of a percentage (20): 0.2 would be read as 0.2%.
- Treating the remaining loan as the full cost. Interest, fees and closing costs come on top and are not included.
- Entering the amount already saved as the percent, or the percent as an amount.
- Assuming the lender's minimum down payment is the same everywhere; it differs by country and by asset type.
About this calculator
This calculator takes a purchase price and a chosen down payment percentage and splits it into two figures: the actual cash down payment amount and the remaining balance that would need to be financed through a loan. It's a simple multiplication, but seeing both numbers side by side next to a real price makes an abstract percentage concrete before you commit to it.
It's used mainly by home and car buyers comparing how different down payment percentages — say 10% versus 20% — change both the upfront cash needed and the size of the loan (and therefore the monthly payment) they'll be taking on. Lenders commonly treat 20% as a threshold on mortgages, below which extra costs like private mortgage insurance often kick in, so buyers frequently use a calculator like this to see exactly what hitting or missing that threshold means in real currency.
