Converting drops to millilitres depends entirely on the drop factor — how many drops make up 1 mL — which varies by dropper, IV administration set, or medication device. The default of 20 drops per mL is a common macrodrip standard, but many pediatric and precision IV sets use 60 gtt/mL (microdrip), so the conversion is simply mL = number of drops ÷ drop factor.

This calculation matters in clinical and home-care settings for accurately dosing liquid medication drop-by-drop, and in nursing for estimating IV infusion rates when only a drip count and drop factor are known rather than a pump's direct mL/hr readout — always using the drop factor printed on the specific device or set in use.
