About this calculator
Joint compound (drywall mud) is the paste used to cover the seams, screw holes, and corner bead between sheets of drywall, and it's typically applied in two to three progressively wider coats to build a smooth, invisible finish. Coverage varies by coat — the first bedding coat with tape uses more mud per square foot than the thinner finish coats — so estimating total consumption means accounting for area and number of coats together, which is what this calculator does to tell you how many buckets to buy.
Drywall installers, remodeling contractors, and DIY homeowners finishing a new build or renovation use this kind of estimate to avoid running out of mud mid-job (which wastes a trip to the store and can leave a visible seam in the drying time gap) or over-ordering and wasting product, since opened joint compound has a limited shelf life once exposed to air.
