About this calculator

Estimating drywall materials starts with sheet count: a standard 4×8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, so sheets needed = wall/ceiling area ÷ 32 (rounded up, with an allowance for waste around openings). Screw count follows from standard fastening spacing — roughly one screw every 12–16 inches along each framing member the sheet crosses — which in practice works out to a fixed number of screws per sheet that installers use as a rule of thumb, typically around 32 per sheet for standard stud/joist spacing.

This calculator takes the area to cover, the sheet size, and screws per sheet, and returns the number of sheets and screws needed. Drywall contractors use it to order materials accurately for a job without over- or under-buying, and DIY renovators use it to shop for a single room project — a garage, basement, or addition — in one trip instead of guessing and making a second hardware-store run.
