About this calculator
The fleet idle fuel cost calculator estimates how much money a vehicle fleet burns while engines sit idling rather than moving. It multiplies your fleet size by average daily idle minutes and a typical idle fuel-burn rate — commonly cited by the U.S. Department of Energy as roughly 0.8 gallons per hour for a light truck and up to a gallon per hour for a heavy diesel truck — then applies your local fuel price to get daily and annual cost, plus total gallons wasted per year.
Idling produces zero miles but full fuel consumption, along with unnecessary engine wear and emissions, which is why many municipalities and companies cap idle time by policy. Fleet managers, logistics companies, and delivery or trucking operations use this calculator to build the financial case for anti-idling policies, auxiliary power units, or driver training, by showing exactly what unrestricted idling costs across dozens or hundreds of vehicles.
