Most credit and debit cards charge a foreign transaction fee — typically 1% to 3% of the purchase amount — whenever a transaction is processed in a foreign currency or routed through a foreign bank, even if you're paying in your home currency at checkout. The fee is calculated as purchase amount × fee rate and added on top of the purchase, so the total charged to your card is amount + fee, separate from any currency-conversion markup the network itself applies.
