Trip fuel cost is a two-step calculation: fuel used = trip distance ÷ 100 × consumption rate (in litres per 100 km), then cost = fuel used × price per litre. Consumption rate itself varies with speed, load, terrain and driving style, so the figure used should reflect real-world driving for the specific trip rather than only a vehicle's official rated average.

Drivers use this calculation to budget for a road trip before setting off, rideshare and delivery drivers use it to check whether a job is worth taking once fuel cost is subtracted from the fare, and fleet managers use the same formula at scale to estimate fuel spend across many vehicles and routes. Comparing the per-trip cost across different routes or vehicles is also the standard way to see whether a longer but more efficient route actually saves money.
