About this calculator

A furlong — literally an old English "furrow-long," the length of a standard plowed furrow — is fixed today at exactly 1 furlong = 201.168 metres = 220 yards = ⅛ of a statute mile. It's one of the few pre-metric agricultural units that never fell out of use.

Horse racing is the reason it's still on calculators today: race distances in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and much of the racing world are quoted in furlongs rather than miles or metres (a mile race is "8 furlongs"), so bettors, race announcers, and track officials convert furlongs to metres routinely when comparing race distances against tracks that post distances metrically.
