About this calculator

Comparing a gas car to an EV comes down to two very different cost-per-mile formulas: gas cost = (annual miles ÷ MPG) × price per gallon, while EV cost = (annual miles ÷ miles-per-kWh, or × kWh per 100 miles) × price per kWh. Because electricity is typically far cheaper per mile of range than gasoline — often by a factor of three or four — the annual fuel savings from switching can be substantial even before accounting for an EV’s lower maintenance costs (no oil changes, fewer moving parts, and regenerative braking that extends brake pad life).

Car shoppers run this comparison to see how quickly fuel savings alone might offset an EV’s typically higher purchase price, and the answer depends heavily on driving habits — someone who drives 25,000km a year and does mostly around-town driving (where EVs are especially efficient thanks to regenerative braking) sees a much bigger gap than someone who drives rarely. Utility companies and EV advocacy groups also publish versions of this calculation to help households estimate the real-world payback period of switching.

Enter your annual mileage, your gas car’s fuel economy and gas price, and your EV’s efficiency and electricity price, and this calculator compares annual fuel costs and shows your potential savings.
