About this calculator

The golden ratio, φ (phi) ≈ 1.618, is the proportion at which the ratio of a whole length to its larger part equals the ratio of the larger part to the smaller part. Dividing a length “in golden section” splits it into a longer segment and a shorter segment such that whole/longer = longer/shorter = φ, a relationship first formalized by Euclid and later associated with Fibonacci's number sequence, whose successive term ratios converge toward φ.

Artists, architects, and designers have used the golden ratio for centuries to guide compositions believed to feel visually balanced — from the proportions in classical architecture and Renaissance paintings to modern layout grids, logo design, and photography's “golden ratio” cropping guide, an alternative to the rule of thirds.

This calculator takes any total length and splits it into its two golden-ratio segments, showing you the exact size of the longer and shorter parts.
