About this calculator

The grain is one of the oldest units of mass still in everyday use, historically based on the weight of a single grain of barley, and standardized today at exactly 1 grain = 64.79891 milligrams = 0.06479891 grams (so roughly 15.43 grains make one gram). It's the smallest unit in both the avoirdupois and troy weight systems, which is precisely why it survives where other imperial units have faded.

Ammunition reloaders measure bullet and gunpowder charge weights in grains because a gram or ounce would be far too coarse for the precision needed, archers spec arrow and field-point weight in grains for consistent flight characteristics, and pharmacists working from older apothecary-system prescriptions and jewelers weighing gemstones still encounter the unit today.
