About this calculator
Hand-grip strength, measured with a hand dynamometer, is one of the most studied simple physical performance markers because it correlates with overall muscular strength, functional capacity and, in older adults, broader health outcomes. Grip strength varies substantially with age and sex, so a raw kilogram or pound reading only becomes meaningful when compared against reference norms built from large population studies stratified by age band and sex, expressed as a percentile against people the same age and sex.
Clinicians and geriatric-care teams use grip-strength percentiles as part of screening for sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) and frailty in older adults, while strength coaches and researchers use the same percentile approach to benchmark athletes' grip strength against normative data during physical testing. A single reading placed against the right reference table turns an otherwise hard-to-interpret number into a relative standing.
This calculator takes your hand-grip strength reading, age and sex, and returns the percentile where your grip strength falls against standard age- and sex-based reference values.
