About this calculator

The Halpin-Tsai equation is a semi-empirical micromechanics model used to predict the elastic modulus of a fiber-reinforced composite from its constituent properties, and is especially valued for estimating the transverse modulus (perpendicular to fiber direction), where simpler rule-of-mixtures models perform poorly. It takes the form E_c = E_m × (1 + ξηV_f) / (1 − ηV_f), where η = (E_f/E_m − 1) / (E_f/E_m + ξ), E_f and E_m are the fiber and matrix moduli, V_f is the fiber volume fraction, and ξ is a curve-fitting parameter that depends on fiber geometry and loading direction.

The parameter ξ is what makes Halpin-Tsai flexible: it's typically set near 2 for transverse loading of circular fibers and can be adjusted for other fiber shapes and aspect ratios, letting the model bridge the two theoretical bounds — the stiff parallel (Voigt) rule of mixtures and the compliant series (Reuss) rule — for the direction being analyzed. Materials engineers use it routinely in the design of fiberglass, carbon-fiber, and other composite laminates in aerospace, automotive, and wind-turbine blade applications.
