About this calculator
A hand is a traditional unit equal to exactly 4 inches (10.16 cm), standardized specifically for measuring the height of horses and ponies at the withers (the ridge between the shoulder blades) — so a horse "measuring 15.2 hands" is 15 hands plus 2 inches (not a decimal), i.e. 62 inches or about 157.5 cm.
The unit is preserved almost exclusively in the equestrian world: breed registries, horse sale listings, competition classes (pony vs. horse divisions are often defined by a hands cutoff), and veterinary records all measure height in hands, so anyone buying, registering, or competing with a horse needs this conversion to compare against metric height requirements.
