Loyalty programs price award redemptions in points, but points only have real value when compared against what the stay would have cost in cash. The standard way to measure that is cents per point: the cash price minus any taxes and fees still owed on the award, divided by the number of points required, converted to cents.

Because each hotel program publishes a rough baseline value for its points (often around 0.5–1 cent each), comparing your redemption's cents-per-point against that baseline tells you whether a particular award booking is a good deal or a poor use of points. Travel rewards enthusiasts and points-and-miles bloggers use this kind of calculation constantly to decide whether to redeem points for a stay or save them for a higher-value redemption elsewhere.
