About this calculator
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged savings account available to people enrolled in a qualifying High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP), and the IRS sets an annual limit on how much can go into it — a separate limit for self-only coverage versus family coverage, adjusted most years for inflation. Anyone 55 or older can also add a catch-up contribution of an extra $1,000 per year on top of the standard limit.
If you weren't HSA-eligible for the entire year — say you enrolled in the HDHP partway through, or lost eligibility partway through — your personal limit is generally pro-rated by the number of eligible months. Any contributions your employer makes on your behalf also count against the same overall limit, reducing how much you can personally contribute.
People enrolled in an HDHP, along with HR and benefits professionals guiding employees through open enrollment, use this calculation to figure out the maximum they can still contribute for the year without triggering the IRS excess-contribution excise tax, factoring in age, months of eligibility, and any employer contribution already made.
