About this calculator

This calculator applies Hubble's Law, v = H₀ × d (rearranged as d = v ⁄ H₀), to estimate the distance to a distant galaxy from its recession velocity — the speed at which it appears to be moving away from us, usually derived from the redshift of its light. H₀, the Hubble constant, describes how fast the universe is expanding, expressed in kilometres per second per megaparsec.

Edwin Hubble's 1929 discovery that farther galaxies recede faster was the first direct observational evidence for an expanding universe, and it remains a cornerstone of observational cosmology. Because H₀ itself is still measured slightly differently by different methods (roughly 67–73 km/s/Mpc — the ongoing “Hubble tension”), this calculator lets you plug in a chosen value of H₀ alongside the recession velocity to get the resulting distance in megaparsecs and million light-years.
