About this calculator

This calculator estimates the fair market value of a donated non-cash item — clothing, furniture, electronics, and similar goods — by applying a condition-based percentage (roughly what a thrift store would resell it for) to the item's original purchase price, then multiplying by quantity to get a total, and shows the potential tax deduction that value represents.

In the U.S., the IRS requires donors to value in-kind gifts to a qualified 501(c)(3) charity at fair market value rather than replacement cost, and donations of property worth over $500 must be reported on Form 8283 attached to the donor's tax return. Individual donors, nonprofit intake staff, and accountants use this kind of estimate to fill out donation receipts and substantiate itemized deductions on Schedule A without over- or under-stating the value of used goods.
