About this calculator

Torque converts between inch-pounds and newton-meters with a fixed factor: 1 in-lb = 0.112985 N·m (and conversely 1 N·m ≈ 8.851 in-lb), since it's simply a unit-of-force times a unit-of-length conversion. This calculator applies that factor in either direction depending on which unit you're starting from.

Automotive and general mechanics use it constantly because torque wrenches and manufacturer spec sheets mix US customary (in-lb, ft-lb) and metric (N·m) units depending on the vehicle's origin, manufacturing and assembly technicians use it to convert torque specs on fastener schedules, and aerospace and mechanical engineers use it when a design standard in one unit system has to be cross-checked against hardware specified in the other.
