About this calculator

This calculator applies the standard purchasing-power adjustment formula: today's equivalent = past salary × (1 + average annual inflation rate)^number of years. It's the same compounding logic used to build a Consumer Price Index (CPI) deflator — each year's inflation erodes the real value of a fixed nominal amount, so the further back the salary and the higher the average rate, the bigger the gap between the number on the old payslip and what it can actually buy now.

HR and compensation analysts use this kind of adjustment to benchmark whether a raise has kept pace with the cost of living, while job seekers and economists use it to compare an old offer or historical wage data against today's prices on an apples-to-apples basis.
