About this calculator

This calculator converts an older 10-digit ISBN into the current 13-digit standard by prefixing it with 978 — the GS1 prefix that brought books into the same barcode system as retail products — dropping the original ISBN-10 check digit, and computing a brand-new one using the EAN-13 weighted mod-10 algorithm (alternating ×1/×3 weights, check digit = (10 − sum mod 10) mod 10).

Every book published before 2007 originally carried only an ISBN-10, so publishers, libraries and online booksellers rely on this exact conversion to catalogue older titles correctly under the ISBN-13 standard now required for barcodes and metadata.
