About this calculator

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character alphanumeric code defined by ISO 17442 that uniquely identifies a legal entity participating in financial transactions worldwide, issued by accredited Local Operating Units under the oversight of the Global LEI Foundation (GLEIF).

The first 18 characters encode the entity and issuer information, while the final two are check digits computed with the ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 algorithm — the same checksum family used for IBAN — letters are converted to numbers (A=10 … Z=35) and the resulting numeric string must leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97.

Financial institutions, regulators, and counterparties validate LEIs before accepting them in trade reporting and KYC processes required under regimes like EMIR and MiFID II; this calculator runs the same MOD 97-10 check to confirm a pasted LEI's check digits are internally consistent, though it cannot confirm the code is actually registered to a real entity.
