About this calculator

Liquidation value estimates what assets would net in a forced sale: liquidation value = (book value × recovery rate) − selling costs. The recovery rate — often well under 100% — reflects that a forced or rushed sale (auction, distressed sale, bankruptcy) typically fetches far less than fair market value, and selling costs cover auctioneer fees, transport, and marketing.

Accountants, insolvency practitioners, lenders, and business appraisers use this figure when a company is winding down or a loan is secured by inventory or equipment, since it tells creditors and owners the realistic floor of what physical assets are worth if they had to be sold quickly rather than the higher going-concern or book value.
