About this calculator

Internet and network speeds are almost always advertised in megabits per second (Mbps) by ISPs and router manufacturers, but the files you download, upload, and transfer are measured in megabytes (MB) by your operating system and browser. Since one byte equals eight bits, the two units differ by a factor of 8: MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8. This calculator converts in either direction so you can translate an advertised connection speed into the real-world download time you'll actually see.

The mix-up between bits and bytes is one of the most common sources of confusion in networking — a “100 Mbps” connection tops out at roughly 12.5 MB/s, not 100 MB/s, which surprises many users the first time they watch a large file transfer. IT professionals, gamers troubleshooting bandwidth, and anyone comparing broadband or mobile data plans rely on this conversion to sanity-check whether a connection is performing as advertised.
