About this calculator

This calculator converts a tempo in beats per minute (BPM) into millisecond delay times for standard note values — quarter, dotted eighth, triplet, whole note, and so on — using the relationship delay (ms) = 60,000 / BPM for a quarter note, then scaling that by the note's fractional value (half, third, dotted 1.5×, etc.).

Audio engineers and music producers use these millisecond values to set delay pedals, digital delay plugins, and reverb pre-delay so echoes land exactly on the beat rather than drifting out of time with the song — a technique widely used in mixing guitar, vocals, and electronic music.

Live sound engineers dialing in a delay pedal on stage, studio producers programming a DAW's delay plugin, and guitarists syncing analog delay units to a click track all use this to translate a song's tempo into the precise millisecond settings their gear needs.
