About this calculator

A mil (also called a “thou”) is one thousandth of an inch, a unit used specifically for very small, precise measurements where a full inch would be impractically coarse. Since one inch equals 25.4 millimeters exactly, one mil converts to exactly 0.0254 mm, and this converter switches between the two units in either direction using that fixed factor.

Mils are the standard unit for wire gauge, sheet metal, plastic film and PCB (printed circuit board) manufacturing in countries using imperial measurements, particularly the United States: PCB trace widths and copper thicknesses are specified in mils, as is the thickness of things like garbage bags, laminating pouches and coatings. Engineers and technicians working across US-based (mil) and international (millimeter) suppliers or datasheets use a converter like this to translate specifications without unit-conversion errors that could affect fit or electrical tolerance.
