About this calculator

Multiplying fractions is one of the more mechanical operations in arithmetic: multiply the numerators together, multiply the denominators together, then reduce the result using the greatest common divisor of the two products to reach lowest terms. Unlike addition, fraction multiplication doesn't need a common denominator, which is what makes it a common early stumbling point for students used to the addition rule.

This calculator carries out that process on any two fractions a/b and c/d, and also converts the reduced answer into decimal and mixed-number form so the result is usable however it's needed. It's a staple of middle-school and early high-school math, and the same operation shows up any time a real-world quantity is scaled by a fractional rate — halving a recipe, applying a discount expressed as a fraction, or working through unit-rate and ratio problems.
